Terracotta rooftops and church domes across central Rome at sunset

Five Grand Hotels, One City

Rome has perhaps forty five-star properties. These are the five we return to, each solving a different problem: where to sleep when you want silence, when you want spectacle, when you want thermal water, and when you want the Colosseum in the window frame.

Choose a grand house if…

  • You want 24-hour room service, a full concierge team and a doorman who remembers your name by day two.
  • You are travelling with family and need connecting rooms — only Eden, de Russie and Hassler offer these reliably.
  • Spa access matters; de Russie is the only one of the five with a proper indoor swimming pool.

Choose the small house if…

  • You value proximity to the ruins over polish — Palazzo Manfredi puts you 90 seconds from the Colosseum's ticket gate.
  • You dislike lobby traffic. Nineteen rooms means you may never queue for anything.
  • You are prioritising one extraordinary dinner and one extraordinary view over breadth of facilities.

A note on the city tax

Rome's contributo di soggiorno for five-star accommodation is €10 per person per night, charged for a maximum of ten consecutive nights. It is almost never included in the rate you see online and is usually settled at checkout in cash or on card. Children under ten are exempt. Budget roughly €140 for two people across a week.
